GLOBAL
SOIL FERTILITY

The challenge was to create an atlas on a topic related to climate change and to present it using visual metaphors. Focusing on the effects of desertification on the global soil fertility, beets were used as the metaphor.

Beets are a vegetable that provide vitamins, fiber, sugar, and betalains. Climate change has taken a toll on the soil in which the beet grows. The beet is no longer as nutritious as it once was, and will only continue to get worse unless we take action.

The result is a book printed using a Riso printer as this printing technique is more environ-mentally friendly. The printer uses soy-based ink made from vegetable oil.
The printing process is time consuming, since it includes printing each color layer by layer. This causes small inaccuracies, which creates unique results.
